    Default 2012 E38 VIN issue.

    I already read the sticky.
This is my very first encounter with an E38 ECM. I have a coworker (Tom) that wants to try out the "B8820 Torque Model" alteration, but doesn't want to alter his stock E38. We purchased a used E38, Service # 12633238. I took a read of Toms ECM to use for a full flash and of the used E38 for its O/S number. According to the E38 Service Number/Operating System tutorial it has/had a compatible Operating System that could be Full Flashed to Toms trucks Operating System. I did the full flash---The software alerted me to an Operating System mismatch and asked if I wanted to proceed---I did. The reflash worked fine. However after reading out the freshly flashed ECM, I noticed the VIN is all 0000000000000.

I also noticed that when I go to the tune and look at the Calibration tab, it says the truck is a 5.3L V8---Which it is. When I go to the VIN tab, it says it is a 3.6L V6---Which it isn't. I have tried to load Toms VIN into the used E38 according to the help in the E38 VIN sticky. When I type in the new VIN and try to apply it I get an out of range message and the VIN shows a Question Mark at the rear of the VIN number. Here are a couple of screen shots of what is happening. The VIN in these screenshots is the one I want in the ECM.

What was the OS in the used ECM and what was the one you flashed in?

The ECM is now corrupted and probably can't be recovered, hence the OS mismatch warning.

Don't be too concerned about the engine type shown, I think the VIN database is out out date for some of the later model vehicles.

    The used E38 was O/S #12636005. Toms 2012 Truck E38 O/S is #12647991. Both ECMs are service #12633238
I didn't even think about it being corrupted. I can read from and write to it fine---Bummer.

2010 GMC Yukon Denali 6.2, STOCK.ctzToms 2012 Truck Mod 1.ctzI purchased another E38 ECM Service #12633238 from a 2010 GMC Yukon Denali 6.2L, I licensed it and tried to flash in Toms 2012 tune and got the same message of "O/S mismatch" and asked if I wanted to flash it anyway---I did not. This second E38 is also O/S 12636005 (The same as the first one) It seems that the 2012 12647991 O/S is not compatible with 2010 O/S 12636005. Here are both tunes.

    Hi Jeff,

Sorry I missed your further responses.
The EFILive software has a built in database of what OS's are compatible between each other, we know what OS switches will corrupt an ECM and what won't. To use the 2012 tune you need a 2012/2013 ECM, you will find the 2012 ECM has a different service number to the 2010/2011 ECM you have. Unfortunately you can't base it 100% on the vehicle year model though, we've seen 2009 model cars running the same ECM as a 2007, yet other 2009 models are 2009 specific ECM's, we've done all the testing for you with that incompatibility check so you don't have to worry about it.
