Simple (possibly stupid) question on RoadRunner

I received my unit today, but cannot test it (since I have a 98, no 99-02 512K cars around here today)

Should Flashscan recognize it when it is just connected with USB? I notice the USB to serial adapter is confgured in Device manager. If yes, what version of Flashscan do you need to have, since I have the latest download in the download page, and no fire button. If no, then I'll just have to find a car to test it on soon. I was just trying to get my ducks in a row before I bring more people over to watch me.
