Default Dumb question on firing order

A typical PID table might have injectors, or coils, or misfires entered as cylinder #1, cylinder #2, etc up through cylinder #8. Are these numbers for the actual cylinders, or are they for their place in the firing order (i.e. when it says cyl #2, is that actually #2, or in a chevy V8 is it cyl #8, the second cylinder in the firing order)?

Those are supposed to be actual cylinder numbers.
