Default I hate to post this here, but ...

The customer support on the PLX wideband forum is horrible.

If I weld in a new bung hole for the wideband will it damage the sensor if I don't keep it powered when running?

I didn't buy a guage and I don't want to mount the controller permanently but I also don't want to get under the car and remove the sensor when not in use.

I believe that it is supposed to be powered/heated when the vehicle is running or it will get damaged. I have mine powered all the time and it has been good for 2 years (touch wood).

Ya, the sensor needs to have the heater running all the time to keep carbon for deposting on it. Running with out the heater will foul the sensor over time.

If I may...the only concern I have for the thing being on/off in the exhaust is if you live in a swamp like Florida... I have noticed a huge build up of mositure in the exhaust after the car sits all night in the garage. I assume it would be worse outside. The concern is for the ceramic pump cell of the sensor. Hot ceramic + mositure + no exhaust flow (like in btw logging/tuning or going key on first thing in the morning without startup)= cracked pump cell Not to be an alarmist but it has happened to me. Just another reason to get a RR. No need to be key on to write to the RR.
