    Default Knock sensor reliability

    It has been quoted on another car forum that once LS1 engines are modded in any signicant way eg cammed /exhaust / stroked etc,the knock sensor settings have gone out the door as engine harmonics are at different levels.

    I am interested to know what people think of the technical merit in the statement. Is there significant unhealthy combustion events occurring that arent picked up by the knock system and vica versa.

    I don't really know about the first part of your statement.
    In the past when I have tuned Holden 5L motors on the dyno, I've heard the motor ping but scan tool has showed no recorded knock readings. The knock sensors will not detect all knocks. I assume this is the same case for the LS1

    The knock sensor is no different from any part of the system , it needs to be tuned for the application to get best results , dont use them as gospell though , they are just a safety feature .

    5.5Khz is the frequency for detonation it seems in all LS1s and LS2s - its bore dependent only.
