5.7 vortec cam retard or offset mode

Hello all I have a 1996 1500 chevy. I am replacing a distributer and am wondering how to set cam retard or offset mode? I do not have a GMtec 2 or a big dollar scaner. The scanner I do have does not have it on it. Is there a program I can Download to my laptop to set it?

I don't know of any downloads or inexpensive scan tools that will display the CMP offset. It would probably be a 1/2 hr charge at most any shop or dealership to set it for you.
