    Default Newbie needs help

    Hey Guys,

I've got a customer that has a 96 Chevy 1500 5.0v8. He took the 4L60 out and put in a 4L80 from a 97 3/4 ton Chevy with a 454ci motor. He needs help with getting the transmission to shift normally. Currently his transmission will shift into reverse and drive but is stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was looking into this and called a bunch of people and even talked to my tranny specialist here at my shop. He said that he will have to run 2 ecms. one from the 96 to make the motor run and one from the 97 to get the tranny to shift. Is this what my customer is going to have to do?

First, since you're dealing with a 96 Black Box PCM, EFILive doesn't support tuning of these controllers.

What wiring changes were made to the stock harness? If nothing, it wont function properly.

Worst case, I'd recommend swapping to an 0411 LS1B 512kb PCM and running an 02 OS with a 4L80E trans segment so it shits properly. However, that is a bit more work as you'll have to properly tune the engine as well.

Check here for some info regarding 4L60E -> 4L80E swaps: 4L60E to 4L80E Swap. Look at posts 11, 12 for more info.

The black box is capable of the 4l80. I have the ability to tune it.

You will have to wire the trans differently, as stated, and reflash for the new trans.

Yep, I imagine the changes in the flash isnt overly complicated on them, they're pretty simple PCMs. Just need the right program and cable, but it's not EFILive.
