Default couple of questions from a beginer

hi all just have a couple of questions for some things im not sure on.

A little info on my ride to start, vx ss commodore, stock internals, diphilipo headers and duel 2.5" system, otrcai, maffless, m6 gearbox, stock diff gears, cos5.
    Ok the questions are
1-what afr would be recomended at 6000rpm wot
2-what is recomended max timing @ 6000rpm wot
3-when knock is loged do you pull timing from cell at start of knock where 0kr is dissplayed or first cell arfter where it peaks and amount of kr is displayed.

    thanks
    AJ

Welcome to the forum mate. I'll answer your questions with what I run and what I do.

    1. My PE is as follows and works well for my bolt on VT
LABELS PE Modifier Based on RPM (AFR)
    RPM {link: SAE.RPM} Value
    0 12.803127
    400 12.803127
    800 12.792194
    1200 12.792194
    1600 12.781279
    2000 12.770383
    2400 12.759505
    2800 12.748646
    3200 12.737805
    3600 12.716179
    4000 12.694626
    4400 12.694626
    4800 12.705393
    5200 12.716179
    5600 12.737805
    6000 12.748646
    6400 12.737805
    6800 12.716179
    7200 12.694626

    2. Max timing differs for everyone, max timing before knock doesn't mean max power. But its close. For example I run as high as 25.8deg at 6500/.84g/cyl. Other cars can't get anywhere near that. If your running 98RON fuel you should be able to run at least 22deg without issue.

    3. Little bit of both I find works. If you want you can use the Spark Retard MAP in the scan tool to try and dial out your KR. I haven't used it yet but it is a handy tool if you have shed loads of KR to dial out. I've always just pulled a quarter of the KR amount in the cells surrounding the incident and half the amount at the incident.

My timing table as it sits today. A trick that I had great success with is to copy with labels the optimal spark table into the high spark table then smooth it out to blend it in. I gave it ago when it was recomended on here once and haven't looked back. I had to dial out a bit of KR but overall it works very well for me and a few other cars I've tuned.

Also, just make sure you start with the Holden timing maps, not HSV. HSV's always had too much timing. You are better off using the stock 225KW timing maps and build up from there.

To be honest, if you are just starting tuning I would not go with the Custom OS5, it can be a little tricky to set up. Your better option would be to use Custom OS1 which basically allows you to run MAFless with the twin timing tables still functional. If you want to do that shoot me your .tun file as is and I'll mail it back to you to get you going. - ross at efilive . com
Save the custom OS 5 for when you fit the 260+ cam.

    Cheers,
    Ross

my timing is getting up around those figures and is running like a dream i was just a litttle unsure as at 1 stage i was pulling timing from knock and it was down to around 15 @ 6000rpm @ .84g/cl and ran like a turttle.
I will give the optimal spark a try and see how it goes as for the fueling i use rpm over map table and my figures for that area are close to what you have.

thanks heaps Macca you were a great help
by the way i notice your from Newy im actually just up the road at rutherford.

Thanks GMPX i actully tried cos1 but wasnt happy with commanded fuel in open loop table as i would get knock at around 1600rpm while cruising on hwy and wanted to slightly richen that area.i much prefer rpm/map open loop table and find it a little easyer.

thanks for the offer to check it out ill fix a couple of things and send it to see what you think.

    Hi Hindzy,

At the start of a run at full load around 1600 to 1800 rpm sometime you have to go as low as 10 deg to have no knock.
By 3200 to 3400 you can run up to 23 to 24 deg depending on the car but no more.
on 96 octane we have here I run 17 deg at full load between 4400 and 5200rpm (peak toque band) then ramp it up to 22 deg by 6200rpm as the torque drops off. These are minimum effective timing figures ie: best torque for the least advance. Going past these on 96 octane usually decreases the overall peak power and sucks peak torque down or causes knock.
    Hope this helps,

    Mike

PS great timing map MACCA looks just like mine
