Thread: Converting 1996 PCM to '98+ or 0411?

Default Converting 1996 PCM to '98+ or 0411?

    Hey guys,

I just got the deal of the century (for me anyway) and the only problem is it is a 1996 Vortec Suburban.

I have been trying to search around for anyone who has converted to a 1998 or otherwise and I seem to be batting zero at this point. She will not be hot-rodded...just want the ability to tune her some.

    Thanks all!

The swap to the 98-99 PCM is not that friendly. I would opt for the 0411 PCM in a heartbeat. Use the 02 operating system for the most capability.

And the '02 OS (specifically 12212156) will allow you to jump to COS5 if you so wish.

I swapped my '96 vortec truck to the 12200411 PCM, and tune with V1. its not that hard, and the 411 is better than the 98 PCMs. check this thread out:

Edit- you'll want to use the '02 Express van OS file (from holdencrazy) as a base for your tuning as it ran the same L31 setup as our trucks.

    Hey KAZ,

The 96 to 98 PCM swap is very doable, but won't gain you much of anything, except for tuning software options. I think you would be better off and happier with the 12200411 PCM swap. It can be done by a first timer in about 4 hrs. You will instantly notice smoother idle and crisper/smoother throttle response. PM me your E-Mail address if you want a copy of the wiring file to install the 0411 PCM into your 96. I can also send you a tune to get you started.

Main thread is very long, but excellent reading. Known differences and some problems are noted below. Great swap, but just be fully aware.

Everyone who has done this is very happy with the end result....

    Hey Jeff,

I got the files sir! THANK YOU!!

I owe you a beer or 10 if you are ever in the CO Springs area.

This is going to sound like an idiotic question, but after looking through some of the threads and seeing your motors photos...it looks like you are running individual injectors and a ram-jet style intake plenum. Is this required for the 0411 PCM or will the 0411 run the Vortec Spider injection system?

Also thank you to all who responded to my request for information. GREAT READING!

    Hey KAZ,

The 0411 will run the stock poppets just fine!
