    Default FlashScan Bootblock Upgrade Failed

Some customers have experienced difficulties when upgrading their FlashScan V2 bootblock from V2.4.xx to V2.5.xx

    Some background info:

The FlashScan bootblock and firmware versions V2.4.xx are designed to work with EFILive V7 software.

The FlashScan bootblock and firmware versions V2.5.xx are designed to work with both the EFILive V7 and V8 software.

You cannot mix and match bootblock and firmware versions V2.4.xx and V2.5.xx.

To add to the version complexity, there were three version of the V2.5.xx bootblock: V2.05.04, V2.05.06 and V2.05.08.

V2.05.08 is the bootblock version that you must use.

WARNING: never use bootblock V2.05.06 - it may render you FlashScan device inoperable. See this thread for more info:
    http://forum.efilive.com/showthread.php?t=7804

Bootblock V2.05.04 is not compatible with firmware V2.05.15 and later. So if you have bootblock V2.05.04, you MUST program in the firmware version V2.05.14 to restore FlashScan functionality.

To do that, put FlashScan into deadpoll mode, by holding the Ctrl key on FlashScan's keypad while plugging FlashScan into the PC. (You may need to leave FlashScan powered off for 5-10 seconds before attempting to activate deadpoll mode).
In deadpoll mode, the two orange LEDs will flash alternately. While it is in deadpoll mode, use EFILive Explorer to program in the V2.05.14 firmware file that is attached to this thread.

Once you have the combination of:
    Bootblock V2.05.04 and Firmware V2.05.14
then you should upgrade the bootblock to V2.05.08 using the EFILive_Explorer program - which is part of the EFILive V8.1 software package.

Once you have upgraded the bootblock to V2.05.08, you can then flash in the firmware V2.05.20.

For more detailed information on programming the bootblock and firmware, please see the document: Start->All Programs->EFILive->V8.1->Documents->Upgrading FlashScan

If a person made a mistake and updated his firmware and did not want to use 8.1 Could he just install a older firmware version, or is that possible.

I have done that before, but I don't think it is recommended.
Just don't install the newer software if you don't want to use it.
    FYI
The latest versions of V7.5 and V8.1 are very good.

You can't go back to a previous firmware version.

The latest firmware is required for both V7.5 and V8.1 software to work correctly. I highly recommend having the latest firmware in your FlashScan regardless of whether you use V7.5, V8.1 or both.

So if someone had 2.4.xx bootblock can they upgrade right to 2.6.xx the latest and then they do the firmware update or must they upgrade to 2.5.08 first then goto 2.6.xx?

I read few post like that but do get confused. If you have to do 2.5.xx before 2.6.xx then how do you find the version needed since you do not keep old software on the site? Just slightly confused on this.

Try using the native USB mode for RR, see my post #3 here:

You must start the upgrade process from firmware V2.04.72 (not any earlier versions or you will run into trouble).
V2.04.72 will update the boot block to V2.05.xx (Can't remember the last two digits)
Then you should update the firmware to V2.05.21
Then you should update the boot block to V2.06.02
Then you should update the firmware to V2.06.12
Each of the required (firmware and bootblock) files should be part of the V8 installation. You can find them in \Program Files\EFILive\V8\Firmware

The V2.05.14 firmware is only included to help in the recovery if you accidentally upgrade the boot block when the V2 device has firmware V2.04.71 or V2.04.70 in it.

The upgrade process is explained in more detail in this document:
    Start->All Programs->EFILive->V8->Documents->Upgrading FlashScan

This brings up the natural question:

What do you do if you have Firmare 2.04.55 and Boot Block 2.04.10.

You say you will "run into trouble." Not wanting to do that I suppose there must be a roadmap around it.

Answer:: I was able to update the firmware from my 7.5.4 software version to the 2.04.72

I then was able to upgrade the bootblock using the V2 to 2.05.08.

    Hope all that will work.

Should be able to update the fw to 2.04.72 then go to the latest boot block (which is 2.06.02 now, this thread is old) and fw 2.06.16 (i might stick with 2.05.15 for now though). Think you have to use the EFILive Firmware Programmer app to get the fw to 2.04.72 but use EFILive HAPI to get the latest boot block and fw programmed in. It may seem complicated now, but if you can get to the latest fw everything from here on out is much simpler.
