does this need to be regestered to work? I tried to scan codes with no luck, it says no interface cable attached.

I'm pretty sure you can read codes without being registered. If registration was required to read codes it would say "unregistered cable", instead of "no cable attached". The "no cable attached" error is displayed when EFILive can't communicate with the interface cable (registered or not).
