When the software is restarted (and working), can you please check the following version numbers:
EFILive Explorer: Goto the [Firmware] tab page and click on the [About] button.
EFILive_Hapi: Click on the EFILive/FlashScan icon in the system tray (near the clock). Then select the "About" tree view item.
The version and build numbers, should be:
EFILive_Explorer: 8.1.2 build 44
EFILive_Hapi: 8.1.2 build 44

Right now I don't know what the problem could be.
Some things that I would check are...
Check the FlashScan boot block is V2.06.02 and the firmware is V2.06.06. Although I guess it is not because you were trying to upgrade the firmware when it failed. What is the current boot block and firmware version of your FlashScan? You can get that info using FlashScan's keypad: F4->F3->F1, then scroll down using the down arrow key.
You could try downloading the base installation from our web site and reinstalling, then doing the check for updates again.
Also try this:
1. Unplug FlashScan.
2. Start EFILive_Explorer.
3. Open up EFILivE_Hapi when it starts up.
4. Turn on tracing: Goto Trace->Settings and check both boxes.
5. Apply changes.
6. Select the Trace window.
7. Move the EFILive_Hapi window to the corner of the screen so it won't be obscured by any error messages that pop up.
8. Connect FlashScan.
9. Click [Refresh] on the [Firmware] tab page in EFILive Explorer.
10. Save the trace in EFILive_Hapi (send the resulting *.rtf file to me at paul@efilive.com).

UAC is super annoying, first thing I turned off in Vista. And Microsoft figured out how much people hate it, looking towards Windows 7 supposedly UAC is going to be way less in-your-face.
