By jove I think I've got it! I once again have a live copy. The fix was to reload the 7.5 software from the original disk, then do the upgrade from the program. I appreciate all the help and advice.

Gotta say though, I hope the next version looks and feels like the 7.5 does. It's pretty easy to figure out even if you aren't a pro with this stuff.
