What about the 24 pid limit? is it a hard limit or a recommended limit for logging speed?

The 24 pid channel count is not a limit, but a recommendation to achieve the fastest logging frame rate...

( most pids occupy 1 pid channel, some occupy 2, and some 4 )

in Stream-Fast mode logging from an LS1B PCM:
    1 to 24 pid channels logs at 10 frames/s
    25 to 48 pid channels logs at 5 frames/s
( a frame containing all the pids selected for logging )

see scantool user manual pdf Appendix E "Scan Modes".
